How can I install GBA4iOS?
Now that MacBuildServer is down, I do not have an official way to download GBA4iOS. However, the helpful people over at GBA4iOSkins.com have put together this temporary webpage where you can download the current version of GBA4iOS, as well as some other nice non-App Store apps. However, you must set your iOS device’s date back to any date before July 17, 2013 for the download to work, and only one app from that website can exist on a device at any time. (If you download a second app, it’ll overwrite the first one.)
What devices are supported?
All iOS devices running iOS 6.0+. iPads will run the app in letterboxed iPhone app mode.
How do I add ROMs?
There are two ways to add ROMs:
- Tap the search icon in the top right of the main screen of GBA4iOS to launch Safari. Find a ROM you want and then download it. Once downloaded, tap “Open in…” in the top left corner, then tap GBA4iOS.
- Download the ROM on your computer. Open iTunes with your iOS device plugged in, then click on your device in the top right corner. Click “Apps” at the top of the screen, then scroll to down to the “File Sharing” section. Click GBA4iOS, then drag in the ROMs.
What ROM filetypes are supported?
As of GBA4iOS 1.6.1, the supported filetypes are .gba, .gb, and .zip.
Can I transfer save files between my device and computer?
Yes, but only save files (.sav), not save states (.svs). Open iTunes with your iOS device plugged in, then click on your device in the top right corner. Click “Apps” at the top of the screen, then scroll to down to the “File Sharing” section. Click GBA4iOS, and now you can drag saves in or out.
If I delete GBA4iOS, will I lose my data?
Yes. If it no longer opens, copy your ROMs and save files to your computer so they are not lost, then you can try reinstalling the app and dragging your data back in.
How do I toggle speed?
While playing a ROM, tap the Menu button, then tap “Toggle Speed”. This switches between playing the ROM at normal speed and playing it as fast as possible.
(Only supported on iPhone 4S+, iPod Touch 5th Gen+, and iPad 2+).
Are Gameboy Color games supported?
Technically yes, but it’s not really worth it. The ROM must have an extension of .gb, and saving isn’t supported (yet).
Can I link two devices with GBA4iOS running over wifi/bluetooth so I can trade Pokemon/battle/whatever else requires two GBAs?
No, but you can transfer the saves to your computer and link them together using a program such as VBA-Link.
The audio is glitchy. Is there a fix for this?
Not in the current version, but in 2.0 this issue will be fixed.
[Insert game here] isn’t working!
Try unzipping the file and re-adding it to the app, as some ROMs don’t work when inside a .zip file. If this doesn’t work, the ROM may just not be compatible.
Help! GBA4iOS won’t open!
First, try turning on airplane mode and opening the app. If this doesn’t work, try setting your clock back to before July 17, 2013, then open the app. If it still isn’t working, you may have to reinstall the app. Remember to back up your data first!
When is GBA4iOS 2.0 coming out?
I don’t have a definitive time frame, but I’d say sooner rather than later.
Will it allow me to use cheats?
Yes, cheats will be 100% supported.
What are the other new features?
I’m not revealing the full feature list yet, but here are a few of the new features I’ve announced:
- Full Gameboy Color support
- iOS 7 compatible UI
- Customizable controller skins
- Dropbox sync
- Audio fixes
- Correct playback speed
How will I be able to download it? Will I need to be jailbroken?
I’m not ready to reveal exactly how it’ll work, but you will not need to be jailbroken.
